I am joining Collaboration Cuties for their super idea of weekly Must Read Mentor Texts. I seriously LOVE children’s books and jump at the opportunity to learn about new ones that are out there, so this linky is just so great! The story I chose to share today is one that I use each year with my little readers and it just warms my heart every time I read it because it addresses the idea of learning how to read. The story is: How Rocket Learned to Read by Tad Hills. Basically Rocket is interested in doing more fun things like playing rather than learning to read but his ‘teacher’, the bird, gets him excited about reading and then Rocket comes around to find the joys of reading!
One of the major components in teaching reading to new readers and any struggling readers is building confidence. Even my little friends who are surrounded by kids who are learning how to read get down on themselves and will say to me, “but I don’t know how to read” when I ask them to read with me. In my classroom, I make a really BIG deal about everyone being good readers and how it’s just a matter of us learning all the steps to get there. So, I use this book as a way to help my little friends realize that it is a challenge to be a good reader, but we just have to work at it together. This book puts that idea out there in a very kid-friendly manner, so I just LOVE it! After we read it together, I often have students say something along the lines of “hey that’s what Rocket did too”–they make a personal connection to the story and then they don’t feel so alone in their journey through becoming readers. I made a fun page that your little friends can fill out after you read them the story as an extension to getting them to realize how to be good readers as well. They just put their name at the top and then draw and write about how they can learn how to read! You can grab the freebie here!

Today’s topic is: If you were stranded on an island, what 3 things would you have to have with you?
1. My phone- I would love to still stay connected to the world while I am so far away from everyone and everything!
2. My running shoes- I rarely get to actually run on the beach, so why not use this as an opportunity to run on the beach each day?
3. A boogie board- ha! Maybe I could use it to get off the island?? If not, it would provide me with some entertainment each day. 🙂
